I had been thinking about doing a nature-inspired still life for awhile and finally got around to creating a few scenes with a bird’s nest (fake), some moss, and a few other tchotchkes. I couldn’t resist throwing in a mannikin for a few shots. Those are fun little things that I need to shoot more often. My favorite part of this particular shoot was that it was shot mostly with natural light. I used diffused window light as my key light, and then added a kicker light, lit candle, or white card here and there for fill and kicker. I experimented with black cards too. Here are a few of the images I came up with:
(I really liked the warmth that the candle light added.)
And here’s a little behind-the-scenes image. This was my basic setup, with variations as noted above.
