I admire Dan Winters’s work immensely—it’s rich and beautiful and mysterious all at the same time. He does marvelous and intricate work with light and shadow, and I found myself loving his images more and more as I studied them. Some of my favorites include his images of Benedict Cumberbatch, Jack Nicklaus, Joaquin Phoenix and Louis Zamperini (and what a privilege it must have been to photograph that man!). I could spend hours on his website—his art is endlessly intriguing.
I made my own attempt at using some of his lighting techniques (it was not easy—still need some practice with it) and came up with a few portraits inspired by Dan Winters.
